Advertising on Television - Getting it Right for Children

The NZTBC recognise the need for a high level of social responsibility in communicating to children. In New Zealand, an effective system of self-regulation ensures that the industry also take into account the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The New Zealand industry of advertisers, advertising agencies and the media have agreed to operate according to the Advertising Codes of Practice. To supplement these Codes, free-to-air television has a number of policies and voluntary rules concerning advertising and children's programmes. These are covered in the guidelines "Advertising on Television - Getting it Right for Children".

The 2008 edition of these guidelines also introduces the new Children's Food (CF) Classification System which restricts the advertising of certain foods and beverages in children's programming times and will be phased in from 1 July 2008.

The purpose of the CF Classification System is to assist the Government's Healthy Eating- Healthy Action plan and consolidates an agreement that was made between broadcasters and Government Ministers in 2007.
