About Maori Television
Maori Television launched on March 28 2004 with a mission to promote and revitalise Maori language and culture. The channel provides inclusive television for all New Zealanders with a schedule comprising at least 80 per cent locally made programming, in both Maori and English languages, covering a range of genre including news and current affairs, sports, children, youth, lifestyle and entertainment, documentaries and films. Maori Television's programming informs, educates and entertains a broad viewing audience and in doing so, enriches New Zealand's society, culture and heritage.
A key initiative undertaken in March 2008 was the launch of a second channel - named Te Reo - which broadcasts in 100 per cent Maori language during prime time. The aim is to better meet the needs of fluent Maori speakers, Maori language learners and to enable New Zealanders to have full immersion Maori language households.
Maori Television broadcasts to more than 90 per cent of the New Zealand population via the UHF frequency and to 100 per cent of the country via the digital platform. The channel is available free-to-air on Freeview channel 5; channel 19 on SKY Digital; and channel 33 on Saturn TV. Te Reo is available on Freeview satellite channel 24 and channel 59 on SKY Digital. Viewers can call the helpline on 0800 MA TATOU (0800 628 2868) for advice on how to tune in to Maori Television or go to the website, www.maoritelevision.com, for more information including video on demand.
