Finalists announced for the Qantas Television Awards 2007

The finalists for the Qantas Television Awards 2007 were announced today. The awards give much deserved recognition to outstanding New Zealand television production, including news and current affairs.

This year, both The Hothouse (Gibson Group - TV ONE) and Outrageous Fortune (South Pacific Pictures - TV3) were the leading drama series in the General Television award categories, with The Hothouse nominated a total of ten times and Outrageous Fortune a finalist eight times.

After winning Best Actor in a TV Drama last year, Ryan O'Kane is once again a finalist for his portrayal of cop Daniel Fitzgerald in The Hothouse. Joining Ryan are co-star Kip Chapman along with Antony Starr of Outrageous Fortune fame for his dual role as Jethro and Van West in the hit TV series.

Best Actress nominees include Outrageous Fortune matriarch Cheryl West played by Robyn Malcolm; newcomer Tania Nolan and seasoned actress Hannah Gould both of The Hothouse series.

In the prestigious News and Current Affairs categories, competition between TVNZ and TV3 was once again fierce, with the two networks nominated for the coveted 'Best News' Award.

In the 'Best News Reporting' category, 3 News scored all three finalist nominations, with Campbell Live a certainty in the 'Best Current Affairs Reporting for a Daily Programme' also with three nominations.

TVNZ's strength in the current affairs categories dominated with Sunday and 20/20 attracting six and three finalist nominations respectively. TVWorks '60 Minutes' was nominated four times, including 'Best Current Affairs' series. Maori Television also secured a nomination for 'Best Current Affairs Series' with their programme Native Affairs.

This year the men were favoured in the 'Best News or Current Affairs Presenter' Award with Mark Sainsbury, Kevin Milne and John Campbell lining up for the award.

Qantas New Zealand Regional General Manager Grant Lilly said that as a founding sponsor of the awards it was pleasing to see their importance grow, to the extent that being a finalist was a very impressive achievement. "Recognising excellence through the Qantas Television Awards is very important for the industry and the people involved. Qantas are delighted to continue our support for the New Zealand television industry and in helping it to develop and expand."

Acknowledging its strong commitment to locally produced television, TVNZ will broadcast this year's Qantas Television Awards on TV ONE Saturday, November 24.

The Chief Executive Officer of TVNZ, Rick Ellis, who hosted today's finalists announcement said: "This year's awards ceremony will celebrate everything that is good about New Zealand's highly successful television production industry."

In addition of the 29 peer-voted categories, the public can vote for their favourite shows and personalities in The Woman's Day People's Choice Awards. Voting is available in four categories: Favourite New Zealand Male Personality, Favourite New Zealand Female Personality, Favourite New Zealand Show and Favourite International Show (full list of nominees follows). Voting forms will be available in the Woman's Day or online (www.womansday.co.nz) with voting commencing on October 15 and closing on November 10.

The Qantas Television Awards 2007 will be presented by Petra Bagust and Jason Gunn at the Auckland Aotea Centre on Saturday November 24. The event will screen on TV ONE that evening.
