Winners announced for inaugural Qantas Television Awards
The winners of the inaugural Qantas Television Awards were announced this evening at a star-studded ceremony held at Auckland's Aotea Centre.
Hosted by Jason Gunn and Petra Bagust, the awards recognised the best of the New Zealand television industry. The ceremony featured a stellar line-up of New Zealand talent and performances by legendary Kiwi singer, Greg Johnson and NZ Idol, Rosita Vai with runner-up Nik Carlson. Awards were presented in thirty-one categories recognising excellence in all New Zealand television production, including news and current affairs.
Bruce Wallace, Executive Director of event organiser, the New Zealand Television Broadcasters' Council said, "Congratulations to all the winners of the Qantas Television Awards. The NZTBC was delighted by the number of entries submitted and our panel of judges, comprising both New Zealand television industry leaders and top international professionals were impressed by the consistently excellent standard of entries."
Qantas New Zealand Regional General Manager, Allan Williams said "the airline is proud of its new association with the inaugural television awards and tonight's winners illustrate the high calibre of talent working within New Zealand television. Qantas has supported media awards in New Zealand for over 30 years."
A feature of the awards ceremony was the announcement of the Woman's Day Readers' Choice TV Awards. Voting was open to the public in four populist categories via entry forms in the magazine and at the Woman's Day website. Woman's Day were delighted with the public's response to these inaugural awards, Editor, Megan McChesney said, "Viewers have voted in their tens of thousands - which is a fantastic result. The public, after all, is the ultimate consumer of what goes to air."
Presenters included Oliver Driver, Jacquie Brown, Oscar Kightley, David Fane, Tainui Stevens, Charlotte Dawson and characters from the popular TV One satirical television show, Facelift.
The NZTBC is made up of the three companies operating national broadcast television channels. They are CanWest TVWorks, Prime Television New Zealand and Television New Zealand.
