Television advertising revenue hits $500m

The television industry has broken through the $500 million barrier for the first time. Revenue earned from advertising in 2000 totalled $501 million. This represents a three per cent rise over the $487 million earned in the same period in 1999.

The NZ Television Broadcasters Council, on behalf of the industry, released the figures. The $501 million includes returns received from broadcast television stations and pay television.

The contributors to the total were the free to air television companies. They are TV One, TV2, TV3, TV4 and Prime Television plus regional television stations.

The Pay TV operator, Sky TV's record year for advertising revenues was also included.

The executive director of the NZTBC, Bruce Wallace said that the revenue growth was steady and reflected ongoing strong programming on television. The period included the Olympic Games and the successful Americas Cup defence. Categories of advertising spending showing particular strength over 1999 were food and beverages, furniture, appliances and leisure activities and telecommunications.
